According to psychology, self-awareness can be defined as “the ability to see oneself as the object of attention or awareness.”

“When you look at yourself and are able to recognize and connect emotions, core beliefs, thoughts, and traits — including weaknesses and strengths — you’re practicing self-awareness.”

Take in this metaphor:

Day One: I walk down the street. There is a big hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost. I am hopeless. It isn’t my fault. It takes forever to find my way out.

Day Two: I walk down the same street. I see the hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don’t see it. I fall in again. I can’t believe I’m in the same place again! But it still isn’t my fault. It takes a long time to find my way out.

Day Three: I walk down the same street. There is a big hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in. It’s a habit. My eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately.

Day Four: I walk down the same street. There is a big hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.

Day Five: I walk down another street.

I love this and am very familiar with the holes in my sidewalk over the years!   It says so much about how we can get stuck on the hamster wheel. To observe our habits as our own we can wake up to making a change and that the redundancy need no longer hold us back.

As with the falling into the hole, your spiritual practice may have you falling into many, many holes. However, you can get better at climbing out by waking up.

It is always at these junctures when you learn about what tools/techniques you have available that have worked in the past and put them to good use.  And no, there are no tools such as screwdrivers or wrenches that will help you out of these dilemmas. The skills and practices you use are uniquely your creations and ones that will have proven successful in assisting you through previous challenging times. They will or already have become a part of your salvation moving forward.

You may find yourself strapping them on like a tool belt every morning before you leave the house. I choose to imagine mine as a big Santa bag chock full of gifts that I dip into on a daily basis. This bag for me has become a most sacred and valued friend, an invisible appendage as you will, and even though it’s already quite full, it continues to expand and refine itself as my growth continues to keep unfolding.

My question for you today:

When did you last find yourself in a hole and what tools did you use to get up and out?  Did you blame yourself for continually falling in or did you celebrate how you finally got out and walked away?  Share below and let’s start the conversation!

As always, sending you many blessings as your brilliance unfolds,
